Oil and Gas Industry: Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream

Measuring instruments for the oil and gas industry

WIKA measurement products are found in the oil and gas industry worldwide. From extraction to regeneration, offshore as well as onshore, our instruments for measuring pressure, temperature, and level help upstream, midstream, and downstream companies operate more safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Oil and gas standards, compliance, and certification

WIKA specialists have a deep understanding of compliance requirements established by leading certification institutes. Our measuring instruments are manufactured in close cooperation with members of ISO 15156 and NACE committees, and in accordance with the latest technical standards. Independent labs have put our pressure gauges, diaphragm seals, diaphragm monitoring systems, and accessories to the test, such as for different gas concentrations in various temperatures and time durations.

Furthermore, we are experts in approval requirements for exporting measurement instruments, such as to Ukraine, Russia, and other CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries. Regulations for measurement instruments are different for each governing body, but WIKA’s product specialists can make sure that instruments come with the correct certifications, metrology logos, and technical passports.

Operators throughout the oil and gas supply chain place a high value on safety and efficiency. Contact the product specialists at WIKA Canada for more information on how our high-quality measuring instruments can help you minimize risk and maximize profits.

Upstream Oil and Gas

In the oil and gas industry, upstream refers to the first part of the supply chain. This segment encompasses exploration, well identification and development, extraction (including hydraulic fracturing), and production.

WIKA instruments are an essential part of today’s upstream oil and gas industry. Our comprehensive portfolio – pressure products, temperature solutions, level gauges, force sensors, primary flow elements, calibration instruments – are used in wide variety of onshore and offshore applications.

With rigorous attention to design detail, manufacturing processes, and high-quality materials, our instruments are built to be oil-field tough. They offer reliable, long-lasting performance in some of the harshest environments on Earth, from extreme heat to arctic cold. Supported by a global network of WIKA subsidiaries, we deliver products where and when our customers need them. This flexibility helps the upstream sector maximize performance, operational efficiency, and utilization of assets.

Our complete range of products are essential for monitoring and controlling the performance of oilfield equipment and processes. If an off-the-shelf product does not suit your specific requirements, WIKA Canada is happy to custom-engineer a solution. Our goal is to provide maximum value for our customers, wherever their upstream operations are located.

Upstream applications

WIKA products are used in a variety of upstream equipment, machinery, and processes:

 Midstream Oil and Gas

The midstream segment of the oil and gas supply chain connects upstream and downstream activitis, and comprise the processing, storage, and transportation of crude oil and natural gas.

As technology in this industry evolves to become more diverse and complex, so do midstream installations. For example, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquified natural gas (LNG) are fast becoming alternatives to gas distribution by pipeline, and these two formats lead to an increased demand for cryogenic solutions in liquid gas tanks. There’s also a continued trend toward greater offshore-based processing and storage, such as floating storage and regassification unit (FSRUs) and floating LNG (FLNG). Finally, the midstream sector faces increasingly strict regulations on fugitive emissions and exposure to corrosive/abrasive process media, and operate in harsh ambient conditions.

WIKA addresses these and other challenges with a portfolio of instrumentation solutions designed to meet midstream companies’ specific requirements. With our global presence and a network of experienced engineers and application specialists, we offer measurement products that improve our customers’ asset safety and operational efficiencies. WIKA Canada is your trusted partner for small-scale or large-scale projects, as well as for your MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) demands.

Midstream applications

Whether you need standard process instrumentation or a custom-engineered solution, you can count on WIKA Canada. Our products and services for pressure, temperature, flow, level, and calibration support all your midstream operations, including:

  • Oil and gas pipelines
  • Oil and gas storage tanks
  • Oil and gas terminals
  • Oil and gas custody transfer

  • LNG carriers
  • Small and midscale LNG
  • Natural gas distribution

Downstream Oil and Gas

In the oil and gas industry, the downstream sector comprises a wide range of applications. Refineries convert crude oil and other feedstock into finished products, and other providers deliver those products to consumers at the end of the supply chain.

Downstream operations comprise more than just fuels. A wide range of other industries rely on petrochemicals:

Refiners are exposed to new challenges in today’s highly volatile and uncertain energy market. Varying feedstock sources demand a great deal of process flexibility to be able to cope with changing – and often times heavier and more sour – crude qualities. Increasingly stringent legislation regarding fuel and product specifications, along with stricter air emission and other environmental regulation, require significant investments in the refineries’ infrastructure and in new process units in order to remain compliant with the latest standards.

To remain competitive in a market with tighter margins, downstream companies need to optimize process efficiency and reliability. Motor breakdowns, inadequate process control, gauge failure, corrosion – these and other issues increase operational costs, planned and unplanned downtime, contamination risks, lost production, and even catastrophic safety and environmental incidents.

When downstream operators have better control over their processes and systems, they will maximize production output, minimize risk and operational expenditure, extend run lengths, prolong machinery and catalyst life, and, ultimately, increase profitability.
